Chapter Sixteen

Petunia did not like baby Gerti, as I named the baby dragon. She watched mournfully as Donovan, Kodi, and I took turns stuffing the dragon’s face full of food.

“Come on, Pet,” I coaxed her. “She’s not going to bite you. Come meet your new sister.”

Petunia vanished into the couch cushions until all I could see was the very tip of her trunk, pointed our way like a periscope. For hours she stayed that way, no matter what I did.

“She’ll get used to it,” Donovan said reassuringly, as I failed once again to get my elephant to listen to me. “When my little brother had his second kid it took forever for my niece to warm up to him, but she did eventually and now she’s like a second mama to him.”

“I didn’t know you were an uncle,” I exclaimed.

He shrugged. “I guess I didn’t mention it. I don’t get to see them much, seeing as they all live in Germany.”

“I’m going to take the next feeding shift,” Kodi announced. “Why don’t you go get some rest?” He looked significantly at me. “Donovan can stay here… we need to talk.”

I yawned, nodding. I was too tired to be curious about what Kodi had to talk to Donovan about.

I managed to coax Petunia out from under her cushion and carried her to my room, just grateful that she wasn’t a full-size elephant. She weighed about a hundred pounds to my exhausted arms and it was a chore lugging her around like that.

“You need to go on a diet,” I grumbled as I dropped her on my bed. She dove for my comforter and disappeared into it.

“Gerti isn’t going to eat you,” I scolded. “I’d be more worried about you squishing her.”

A reproachful blue eye appeared from under the blanket and then disappeared again.

I sighed. “All right. I give up. I need some sleep before I can deal with you and your issues. I don’t get the big deal. At least she’s not as loud as the puppies were that first night.”

Petunia had seen so many creatures come and go that I was truly astounded at her reaction to the dragon. It just went to show—you never knew enough about an endangered species like Petunia’s. Perhaps there was an instinctive fear of dragons bred into all pink mastodons.

I flopped onto my bed, desperate to close my eyes, just hoping that I wouldn’t end up with nightmares with all those horrible hacked-up images still floating around in my brain.

I could make out the murmur of voices from the other room, but I couldn’t hear what the men were saying to each other. I lay there for a long while, thinking how nice it was to share my home with other, human, people for once.

Petunia, still under the blanket, wrapped her trunk around my wrist. I smiled to myself and yawned.

I was so freakin’ tired.
